for a z/OS Expert Mainframe Engineer (f/m)


Project environment

Engineering of a stable, reliable, well performing, well documented, auditable and fully monitored z/OS platform (incl. storage) that serves as the base platform for Finance applications at a Swiss Insurance Company. He/she will work in a team of three engineers and in close collaboration with Operations Units.


Tasks

• Develop and make best use of the capabilities, capacities and the potential of the insurance’s modern Mainframe environment to the benefits of the clients and all platform users.
• Ensure that new, value-adding features and functions are made available to clients/users.
• Prepare the platform to be well positioned for handing over operations and partially engineering to a vendor/partner.
• Engineering (incl. platform architecture involvement) of the z/OS platform - new releases, features, functions and extensions to the platform. Does include Mainframe storage engineering, automation and tooling aspects also.
• Responsible for a fully supported, stable, reliable, well performing z/OS platform.
• Continuously improve the platform (performance, security etc.).
• Design and implement high-impact configuration changes. Plan, install (non-production environment), configure, customize and maintain IBM and ISV platform products on z/OS for a multi-LPAR Geographically Dispersed Parallel Sysplex (GDPS). Get new and extended implementations and versions ready to be handed to operations and production services teams to be rolled out into production environments.
• Implement, manage, maintain and upgrade various IBM program products and ISV software.
• Provide consultancy and support to operations teams, tackling and solving issues in production environment in support of operations.
• Documentation (incl. security, automation) of the platform, ensure auditability and evidence of compliance to all standards and policies for the platform.
• Ensure proper monitoring of the platform by engineering monitoring solutions for the platform in close collaboration with operations.
• Review of PMRs and Hold Actions, closely collaborate with Op units on implementing changes (e.g. PMRs) to the productive systems (incl. production).
• Support clients in addressing open issues in the architecture or solution and take up & implement new solutions for meeting clients' needs.
• Prepare Mainframe platform for handing operations (and partially engineering) to a partner/vendor.
• Ensure link (information flow) between vendor and the client’s users in engineering matters.


Requirements

• In-depth knowledge of the z/OS platform with at least six years of active System Administration responsibility on such platform/experience in systems programming in a large Parallel Sysplex environment required.
• Your expertise must cover core z/OS system, RACF and Mainframe storage, additionally some of the following areas shall be covered: JCL, JES2, SMP/E, XCF, GRS, and Sysplex processing, system monitoring tools and reporting software including RMF, SMF, and MainView, HCD, programming experience using COBOL, REXX or Assembler and performance tuning concepts including WLM and RMF.
• Besides core platform knowledge (z/OS, RACF, TSO, JCL) extended knowledge (architecting & engineering of solutions) in the Mainframe, Mainframe storage, security and automation area as well as a good understanding and experience in the area of capacity management expected.
• Experience in managing small to medium-size projects required.


Soft skills

• Very good command of English language in speaking and writing is a must, German is an asset.
• Highly motivated, good team player, experienced in working in diverse, international project and implementation teams.
• An attitude of continuously looking for ways to improve our Mainframe Computing Service offering is much appreciated.
