Application Portfolio & Release Manager (Win10 Application Readiness Workstream)
About the project:
Our client has launched the project for the global Windows 10 migration and is seeking support for the project initiation and define phase. Extension of the role past these phases desired if candidate is a good fit.
The following items will be upgraded:
- Windows 7 to Windows 10
- Internet Explorer 10 to Internet Explorer 11
- Microsoft Office 2010 to Microsoft Office 2016
This translates to an impact all sites and business functions. Furthermore the project is expected to have many dependencies to other business and IT endeavors that need to be identified and managed accordingly.
Within the project the Application Readiness Workstream is handling all business application-related topics around the migrations. It consisting of packaged and web applications compatibility testing and remediation support as well as support for locally installed and MS Office application readiness assessment.
About the role:
The Application Portfolio & Release Manager checks, standardizes, manages and statistically analyzes all app based information which is relevant for the Windows 10+ project. Furthermore the candidate is the key person between engineering, software portfolio management, and the application portfolio management tool team.
The candidate is expected to manage all app information from the different app categories and provide reporting services to different stakeholder. The reporting needs to provide weekly reports which allow trends for early identification and elimination of upcoming project delays. Candidate is expected to develop these reports from the data available in the SQL database of the application portfolio management tool. This includes identification which reports are required for which target audience, design of the reports, and automated creation and publishing of the reports.
Furthermore the candidate will ensure that the custom-built application portfolio management tool will be fit for purpose for the Windows 10+ migration and long-term when switching over to a more frequent Windows update cycle and a yet-to-be defined process for application compatibility testing (Liaison between project and tool owner and the near-shore developers).
During Initiate and Define phase, candidate is expected to set up the reporting services (designing and implementing the KPIs and reports), evaluate the process how to freeze the application start portfolio and how to add new applications after closing the gate and support defining the test strategy and test plan. The Candidate will work closely with the Application Readiness team leads, the client engineering team concerning new client releases and stakeholder in the business with information needs.
During the Testing phase, act as liaison for the Engineering team and the Business Application Owners; impact assessment of new Windows client releases to the application portfolio and possible re-testing needs; bringing requirements from the Business Application Owners forward to the Engineering team etc.
Main tasks:
- Management of the application portfolio plus securing the data consistency by tracking and versioning of backups
- Definition and planning of upcoming Windows releases plus their content (release calendar); ensuring application-related requirements are taken into consideration
- Structure and coordinate the testing phases before the Windows client releases (plus creation of rollback plan(s)
- Create Test Strategy and Testing Report document in close collaboration with Application Readiness Stream Lead and IT Quality
- Coordination of fixing of upcoming failures during releases
- Announcement of unplanned delays by using the KPI-symbols (eg traffic light) for the management
- Support of the rollout team with application related questions
- Consistent and replicable tracing of all decisions per software (-package)
- Complete audit of all incoming information and changes with timestamp and registration name
- Development and Release Management for the data, information- and decision templates
- Development of algorithms for the software consolidation especially for the late registrations
- Information of all involved release participants and release documentation
- Support shaping and documentation of the to-be application readiness testing process for the new Microsoft update strategy
Qualifications:
- Experience in migration/deployment projects (eg rollout projects, handling of large data sets), ideally in the application readiness area
- Very good analytic skills
- Process definition
- Technical and functional knowledge in the field of relational databases (preferred MS SQL Server)
- Report generation and automatization (MS Reporting Services, VBA or similar)
- Knowledge about procedural problem-solving approaches and derivation of logical algorithms regarding the data consolidation
- Experience in defining and calculating KPIs for various levels of management
- Advanced presentation skills for management
- Microsoft background for Windows client release development and deployment (System Center and Windows10 knowhow)
- ITIL Foundation certification or relevant experience in Service Management
- Experience in virtual, international team settings
- Business-fluid in English, both verbally and in writing
