Kabel Deutschland (KDG) manages a cable network in 13 of the German states and provides about 9 million households with its services. As the biggest cable and triple play provider in Germany, KDG develops and brings to market a solid offer spawning Digital TV, Broadband internet access, and voice-over-tv-cabel landline solution.
KDG offers for all content providers an open digital television platform. The company manages the network, brings end-to-end connectivity to market, and takes pride in high value added product and services.
Kabel managed in FY 2007/2008 a turnover of 1.2 Billion EUR, with an EBITDA of 457.8 Mio. EUR, for a total of 2.750 employees.

EDWH ETL development Leader (11.2008 – 5.2008) :
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kabel Deutschland has started a large initiative to setup their first Enterprise DataWarehouse (EDWH). This initiative aims at replacing all the existing reporting silos, spanning heterogeneous tools, databases, teams and technologies in a central cost-optimised platform.

As a leader of the ETL development team :
? I have taken responsibility of the entire end-to-end data load.
? I have designed the software & process architecture to support this ambitious aim.
? I have successfully convinced internal IT of the needed technological changes (CDC, Storage, Database architecture, …).
? I have supported the project managers and analysts making their implementation roadmaps and time estimation
? I have tracked the project progress & solved roadblocks
? I have been deputy to the project manager

Role description :

? Lead of ETL development.

KSC-TSC spin off (06.2008 – 7.2008) :
------------------------------------------------------
After the successful delivery of the ETL jobs, I was asked to take over responsibility for a critical stream aiming at supporting the go-live of the first Datamart to go productive. Due to project delivery shifting, inter-project dependencies made this task particularly difficult.

CreaXum – Fortis – BE
Banking
IT, BPR Platform : BusinessObjects, WEBI, Informatica, Oracle.
Areas : Datawarehousing.

Environment description :
-----------------------------------
Fortis is an international provider of banking and insurance services to personal, business and institutional customers. They deliver a total package of financial products and services through our own high-performance channels and via intermediaries and other partners.
Fortis ranks among Europe’s top 20 financial institutions, with a market capitalisation of EUR 40 billion at year-end 2007. Together with ABN AMRO, we have a presence in over 50 countries and a dedicated, professional workforce of more than 85,000. All this makes us a leader in financial services in Europe, a top 3 private banker and a top tier asset manager.

Project – Sirius Production :
---------------------------------------------------------
Fortis has launched a large implementation of the new version of its current backend tool : MIDAS+. This tool has no reporting feature, and we have to propose a global solution to cover all reporting and data extracts needs linked to it.

As a project manager, I successfully lead a team of up to 13 persons to deliver a complex datawarehouse in a very short timeframe. My work there got particularly appreciated for :
? My efficiency at meeting deadlines, escalating issues and communicating openly about the project.
? My way to keep the project team focussed and efficient
? My in-depth knowledge of datawarehousing, that could compete with the knowledge of the full-time datawarehousing architect (she has 15+ years of experience in the field)

CreaXum – Atradius – BE
Insurance
IT, BPR Platform : BusinessObjects, WEBI, DESKI, Informatica, Oracle.
Areas : Datawarehousing.

Environment description :
-----------------------------------
Atradius is one of the world’s leading providers of credit management solutions :
? They are the world’s most international and integrated credit insurance company
? They are present in more than 160 offices in 40 countries across the globe
? They have a team of 3,900 people across the world
? Their product offering is truly global
? Their world wide market share is 31%
? They have annual revenues of € 1.8 billion
? Their Financial Strength Ratings are ‘A’ (stable) from S&P and ‘A2’ (stable) from Moody’s
? They insure trade transactions worth € 465 billion annually
? They provide their customers with access to information on 52 million companies worldwide
? Over 22,000 credit decisions are made by us daily
? They have more than 80 years of experience in the credit insurance business

Project 1 – MI (Management Information) :
---------------------------------------------------------
Atradius has a 6 years old, weekly refreshed datawarehouse that has never been updated since its original setup. In order to modernise it, Atradius planned a two step approach :
1. Pimp up the existing solution to fix the highest pain points
2. Craft an entirely new concept, based on the latest technology available and streamlined with the current Business Needs

As an analyst and technology expert, I have prepared the feasibility study and the detailed specification of this new generation datawarehouse. As a project manager I have coached and developed the internal resources, promoted the project within the company and lead it to completion.

Project 2 – Ledger 2 Leger :
--------------------------------------
Ledger 2 Ledger is the back-end secure channel Atradius opens with volume customers who want to automate the communication between their ERP and the ERP of Atradius Collections, SCORE.

I was called into that project as an analyst about 6 months after its start, after the 3rd analyst left it on short notice. Together with the project manager and with internal support from within the team, we curbed it back into a successful implementation

Project 3 – Collect@Net :
----------------------------------
Collect@Net (C@N) is a web-based front-end proposed to Atradius customers to manage their case online. This interface aims at :
? Replacing costy human interactions between customers and Atradius case managers (e-mails, calls, …) by a self-service platform for case introduction and management.
? Provide self-service reporting possibilities for customers and brokers
? Improve the image of professionalism Atradius casts towards their customers

As an analyst, I have helped gather business requirements, organise them and propose alternative solutions to choose from.
I have further defined them into functional specifications so that the (outsourced) development team has a clear scope and vision of the work to do.

Cablecom has moved far beyond a time when they provided only analog TV and radio to their customers. The "Digital Revolution" of recent years enabled them to change the essence of who they are and what they can do for their customers. Today, thanks to their creativity, innovation and significant infrastructure investments, cablecom has become a competitive provider of comprehensive, interactive communications for both residential and business customers.
? With cablecom digital TV, for example, they are transforming the customer’s television experience from passive to dynamic--from one-way to interactive.
? They were the first company in Switzerland to introduce broadband Internet.
? Last but not least, they’ve made a big splash in the industry by launching of the new cablecom digital phone service in June 2004. Digital phone is the first true alternative to fixed-line telephone service in Switzerland.
Television, Internet and Telephony - many in their industry call this the "Triple Play". They prefer to simply say that they’re giving their customers the products they want at the right prices and with the convenience of receiving them all from a single source.

CreaXum – FMB - BKW – CH
Energy
IT, BPR Platform : BusinessObjects XI, DataIntegrator, Oracle.
Areas : ETL, Reporting, Business Process Reengineering.

Environment description :
-----------------------------------
BKW FMB Energy Ltd (BKW) has been in business for over one hundred years. With energy sales of 18 Terawatt-hours and a workforce of approximately 2,000 employees in German and French-speaking Switzerland, it is one of the major Swiss companies integrated in the European grid.

The majority of the share capital of CHF 132 million is held by the Canton of Berne (52.91%) and E.ON Energie AG (20%).

In its home sales area - North Western Switzerland from the Alps to the French border - BKW supplies electricity to a million persons in around 400 communities: economically, safely and ecologically. In 2005 BKW supplied over 7,058 Gigawatt-hours of energy to private customers and distribution partners.

Leading supplier of wind and solar energy:
BKW produces virtually CO2-free power from its own seven hydroelectricity plants and the nuclear power plant in Mühleberg near Berne, from hydroelectricity plants owned by 16 partner companies, and via purchase rights in partner nuclear power plants.

BKW is the principal partner in Switzerland's largest alternative energy production plants (Mont Soleil solar energy plant, Juvent wind power plant and the Stade de Suisse solar power plant).

Since 1951 BKW has been continually expanding trading activities in the Swiss and European markets. In 2005 electricity sales (trading and energy sales) totalled 7,044 Gigawatt hours. Since 1999 BKW has operated Electra Italia, a distribution company based in Milan, Italy.

Project description :
-----------------------------------
At BKW, the energy traders were lacking the tools to exactly track and manage the profits generated by their intraday trading activities.
In ordre to fill that gap, I was made responsible for a sub-project of the global trading datawarehouse environment, aiming at locating the needed data, think of an appropriate infrastructure, respecting the tools and standards in place, in order to provide a visual output matching requirements setup by BKW, in collaboration with Accenture.
The ability to respect strict internal control, managing complex and sometimes conflicting interest was a strong differentiator for the role.

We have been commissioned by the customer to optimise their current purchase request workflow in order to present better budget visibility and improved control in the approval process.

Teleroute is Europe’s leading on-line freight and vehicle exchange service. To keep and reinforce that position, Teleroute wants to have a better visibility on their clients in order to propose them an improved and tailored service.

Téléroute is the European leader in freight exchange. Téléroute enables freight carriers around Europe to share empty truck information and needed transportation information for optimum trucks utilisation.

Project description :
-----------------------------------
Téléroute wants to have a consolidated view on the way their customers use the different platforms Téléroute proposes (Client/Server / Web based, Packaged / on demand, …) This will enable Téléroute to better understand their customer’s needs. This knowledge can in turn be leveraged to more accurately focus their products and improve their customer reach.
Téléroute has started a certain number of initiatives in that direction, all of them helping Téléroute to build their vision of the future, several of them even resulting in a practical implementation. The two main implementation are :
? A Siebel / Siebel analytics implementation focussed on Customer Relationship Management and Reporting
? A more technical ETL / SYBASE IQ / Business Objects / WEBI reporting view consolidating usage output and logs from the various end-users applications themselves.
These data, along with other more isolated data (forecasts, budgets, . . . ) are manually consolidated in excel for customer RFM segmentation and analysis, board reporting, …
Teleroute now realised that, in order to reach their objectives and remain competitive in their domain, they needs a clearer business intelligence architecture that can cope with a new set of needs.
To have a better vision of how this new business intelligence architecture should be, Teleroute asked us to perform an audit about the current situation.
We also gathered the high level requirements this architecture should comply with. Finally, we proposed various solutions best suited to meet Teleroute’s needs, all the while leveraging the existing investments that have already been made by the previous projects.

CreaXum – Carat – F & CH
Advertising & media
IT, Financial, IT management Platform : Business Objects, WEBI, DataIntegrator, Oracle, Sybase, DB2, AS400, IIS, …
Technologies : Datawarehousing, ETL, Datamining, EAI, Budget management, Large databases, Training & coaching

Environment description :
-----------------------------------
Carat is one of the top 3 European advertising broker. The worldwide headquarters of Carat are in France. There, I came in as a technical reinforcement to the existing Business Intelligence team. Over six months, I graduately took over responsibility of the whole Business Intelligence department of Carat, consisting of both internal and external resources. This allowed the management team that was there when I came in to move to even greater challenges. Together with one internal IT director, I coached and developed internal people, then selected, successfully hired and retained high potential young hires that we introduced as further external resources. Under my supervision, they swiftly developed the technical and human skills needed in such a demanding environment.

Project description :
-----------------------------------
-- Corporate datawarehouse --
Carat has several operational reporting applications in place. These applications have the advantage to propose a very detailed view of data (OLTP – row level) and to immediately reflect all changes in the data-entry (OLTP) system. However, the architecture in place has several flaws :
? Very few consolidated views exist.
? The setup cost for a new view is high, as it requires to roll-out a new version of the reporting software.
? The reporting application is sometimes bundled with the data-entry (OLTP) system, sometimes a separate application that reports on the same data, sometimes a separate application that reports on part of the data and part of data addressed by another data-entry system.
? All such application exist on various platform (AS400 & Windows; DB2, Oracle, Sybase; Thick-client & web client; package & custom-made . . . )

The director in charge with software development then launched a project to create a corporate datawarehouse. This datawarehouse :
? Will provide a central point for information, integrating data from various datasources.
? Will be accessible through various ways :
? Thick windows client
? Web client
? Standard web reports launched from other application
? Standard report objects, embedded within other applications
? Will propose an open architecture on both ends, in order to both easily integrate new data sources as well as provide service for new platforms.

-- Electronic billing --
The French law now recognise the legal value of an electronic bill, as long at the electronic billing is been centralised by selected third parties companies. Using DataIntegrator, we extract data from a AS 400-hosted DB2 Database and transform them to match a strandard XML template (*.xsd). The extracted XML file is the FTP’ed to this third party’s collection server to be further processed by them and finally delivered to the end client.

-- Financial reporting --
Financial controlling at Carat uses a decentralised financial datawarehouse for their daily business. This datawarehouse was setup by another company and is not satisfying them. We reverse-engineered the ETL process as well as the universe & the reports in order to incrementally modify the solution to one closer to their needs. Important aspect on this otherwise uneventful project is business continuity as well as proper fail-safe mechanisms.

-- Financial optimisation --
Carat used a combination of FTP data transfers, VB programming and Excel macros to import data from an AS400 accounting system and present aggregated reports. These reports present the margins they are realising, in a reporting style.
This system presents large amounts of data, hiding the real information. This system does allow nor data browsing neither OLAP capabilities. The current architecture (FTP file transfer + VB + Excel macros) is unstable : Operating System upgrade (migration, service pack, …) or other software upgrade (Microsoft Office, …) will most likely have an impact on the good working of the solution, either immediate (data unavailable) or differed (data been incorrectly recognised and not been processed according to the business rules).
In order to show the power of an OLAP solution, while allowing them to go for a full-sized solution once our approach would have gathered enough credibility, we first implemented in a short time frame (3 weeks) one business objects universe based on the data loaded from the flat files. Based on this universe, we have re-created the 4 reports they used to have in excel. This solution eliminated most of the risks (excel macros, outdated vb application) while presenting to the end-users a familiar interface (Business Objects reports can further be exported to excel).
After a few months, this new front-end application having gathered excellent reputation, we launched a series of end-user trainings focusing on WEBI, the web interface to Business Objects. The users were taught how to create their own reports and how to use the power of OLAP to explore untapped source for information such as “Which contracts am I making the most margin on ?”, and “Which customers have renewed the most contracts this year ?”
In parallel, we gradually changed the back-end architecture to a real datawarehouse database (separate logical server, star-schema architecture, reduced joins and computation in the generated queries, . . . ) loaded through Business Objects Data Integrator (BODI), the OLAP tool from Business Objects.
As a final enhancement, we integrated this datamart into the corporate datawarehouse.

-- Architecture stability and predictability project --
The technical environment at Cara must stay very flexible to business need. This is quite common in the media field as this is, by nature, a very versatile business. In such an environment it is more difficult to ensure long-term stability of IT-related solutions.
In order to ensure longer term stability of the solutions I setup, I proposed a very simple set of procedure to follow when working with datawarehouse projects. This set of procedure started with server reinstallation checklists. But soon the advantage of this became obvious to peers and upper management, and I received back-up to further enforce stability within IT projects.
As of today, guidelines and best practice include server installation checklist, server configuration versioning, software evaluation and testing methodologies, documentation versioning over the full project -lifecycle, software development enhanced versioning.
Typical server reinstallation time, before the project, was estimated between 2 days and 5 days, depending on setup complexity. After the project, if is of 15 minutes in case of configuration crash or reparable hardware crash and of 8h in case of server replacement. Similar gains were measured in the areas of change of software developer, project freeze / unfreeze, customer satisfaction.
Spin-offs this initiative emerged in other area.
-- Diamant Orange --
Carat launched the development of a custom-made budgeting tool for advertising campaign. This tool allowed monitoring the forecasted impact of budget repartition on final product impact. After the advertising campaign, real impact data were consolidated and the campaign manager had the tools to compare the forecasted data with the effective data, and accordingly validate / modify the forecasting formulas.
In this project data transfer (both batch and real-time) across the various platforms were done with Data Integrator

-- Coherence --
A set of validity check mechanisms were implemented in order to monitor all Data Integrator data transfer and to quicker respond to user inquiries related to (most often incorrectly) presumed data errors.

-- Scheduling Régies --
In order to have a better vision on unpaid bills, Carat launched the development of a web-based application that allows seeing which partner has open bills, together with a full description of these bills.
I managed this project, found both external and internal technical and business resources to implement it, managed customer expectation, and all other aspects of it. The team successfully delivered three increasingly complex versions of the solution. Version I was a proof of concept, version II a standard software (meeting customer’s initial expectations), version III delivered the real added-value our customers expect from us.

Biotechnology
IT & PI Platform : Cognos, Oracle, Informatica, Oracle manufacturing, Oracle Financial.
Technologies : Datawarehousing, Large databases.

Environment description :
-----------------------------------
Serono, a very big Geneva-based biotechnology customer was implementing both Oracle Manufacturing and Oracle Financial. Based on the data stored in this ERP, they wanted to have both operational reporting and OLAP possibilities.
? In order to be able to deliver real-time data, we added an interface layer within the operational database, made of custom views and some triggered tables with a complex recursive packaged logic for more advance reporting. Based on that real-time data, we implemented about 40 Cognos reports, accessible both via a web server and in a client-server configuration. Future upgrades and customizations of the ERP will be much easier to implement thanks to that interface layer.
? Using Informatica, we builded several subject-specific data marts sharing a common data dictionary. Some of the data marts were accessed by Hyperion, some other by a custom-made web-based application.

? As a team player, I take part and sometimes manage medium to large scale IT projects, both nationals and internationals.
? As Switzerland’s most knowledgeable person in my field, I coach and develop more junior staff (apprentices, new hires, lesser experienced staff, …) both in my technical field (Lotus Notes, IIS, TCP/IP) as well as in personal organization & time management, communication skills, etc . . .
? As a Lotus Notes technical expert, I am part of the PwC Swiss core technical team for Lotus Notes.
? I am the Swiss Technical champion for the PwC Worldwide Audit Tool.

Project example :
--------------------------
? The biggest project I had to lead was an architecture split where all working databases for the Swiss firm had to be segregated in two secured, mutually exclusive, domains. This impacted 3.500 users.
? Another large project I took part in aimed at setting up a web-accessible project support tool. The tool itself was quickly selected (quickplace, a Lotus Notes plug-in). However, It took more time to design a secure architecture involving LDAP authentication, secure replication between the internet zone (DMZ) and the internal zone (LAN), document encryption and secure mail-in.

EYC – Arrows holding – D Distribution
Financial Platform : Windows NT, AS 400.
Tool : Business objects.
Technologies: Decision Support System (DSS).

Problem overview :
The customer needs a standard semi-automated tool to centralize and consolidate all financial information reported across all European subsidiaries.

Current state :
- Each subsidiary uses a different ERP (sometimes only an accounting software) to store and manage all accounting information.
- Based on data stored in these IT systems, each subsidiaries fills in an excel template that is e-mailed to Arrows holding. These files are used for financial controlling, compensation packages determination, …

Current state issues :
- The financial terms used across Europe are not consistent. This has a legal basis (accounting requirement vary from one country to the other) but also an historical one : each subsidiary used to have some habits, not always taking into consideration the repercussions of those on other subsidiaries.
- The computation of financial measures does vary.
- The repartition of cost and benefits in different product lines uses non-standardized rules.
- The geographical repartition of cost centers and reporting packages also are not easy to clearly and consistently identify.

The solution proposal :
The solution we will provide needs to harmonize the terms used in the reporting packages, link them to a unique definition and a unique computation across all countries. The geographical repartitions/split of/between cost centers, reporting area/country also needs to be further refined and fine-tuned in order to match the business reality.

Role description :
-----------------------------
- Four persons are involved in this first prototyping phase of the whole project. My role as the Business Objects subject matter expert (SME) lead me to be the lead prototype developer and Data warehousing consultant.
- Together with the lead Business Analyst (Karen), I defined the measures and dimensions to be used in this prototype in order to best show the full potential of our solution.
- I designed and implemented the database used during this prototype.
- Based on interviews Karen and I performed with the customer, we designed and implemented the user interface.
- This being her first assignment involving development of Business Objects interface, I also was in charge of her training and sufficient knowledge transfer during the assignment in order to ensure her ability to undertake further DWH/BO assignments on her own.

I counsel the team over "best practices", how to enable and maximize reusability, technical "tips'n tricks" in order to maintain the overall quality of COINS on a high level and maintain the overall development time as low as possible.

- Software architect COINS.
Based on input from the business (business analysts, power users, ...), I build prototype, first on paper than electronically, possible solution to their business problems / needs. I do that using an ICT tool (COINS), developed on a Lotus Notes Platform.
Once the project sponsor and the quality insurance team have accepted this prototype, the development team implements the solution.

- Coach Lotus Notes.
The team has rather little experience in Lotus Notes (0 to 6 months). I therefore have been given the responsibility to let them build experience in a controlled environment. Most of them are also lacking a structured approach and methodology, which I am also responsible to instill them and gradually bring them to the level of expertise needed by the environment.
